Why do I paint?

I paint because I feel like I must. My mind is often overflowing, and painting is how it spills into the world - It is the most intuitive way I know how to make sense of the human experience.

There is just an incredible lot to notice and feel in this world. Every living thing is composed of layers upon layers of complexity - chemistry, information, consciousness - all interacting in ways we barely understand.

Given this complexity, it's challenging to express oneself. Often, a distinct feeling grips me and as I explain myself, I reliably run out of words. For the other person to navigate my mindscape, I need a visual map instead. A painting curates the messy conversation that I want to have.

I paint due to the restlessness of my hands and mind. I want to reply, to contribute, to participate. To create is to participate in life.
